Loss of hearing doesn’t have to be just another symptom of old age. Many types of hearing loss are caused by thing you can control. So don’t take deafness sitting sown!

Meniere’s Syndrome If you are overweight and notice that your hearing and balance have decreased with time, you may be suffering from meniere’s syndrome. This disease’s symptoms include ringing in the ears, dizziness, and loss of hearing and balance.

Researchers from a direct link between Meniere’s and excessively high levels of glucose and blood fats in the body. In fact, many people who suffer from this disease are obese. Scientists believe that meniere’s is an early sign of hardening of the arteries and heart disease.

In a study, doctor’s placed menier’s patients on a low fat, low cholesterol diet which allowed them to lose weight while lowering glucose and blood fats. Many of the patients reported a significant increase in hearing –as much as 30 decibels in some cases!

Zinc and hearing loss Zinc sulfate is a promising treatment for older patients with hearing loss and tinnitus. In recent studies, older patients received 600 milligrams of zinc sulfate every day. The result was a complete remission to inner ear degeneration and a return of hearing.

Before trying zinc supplements on your own, talk to your doctor about proper dosages for you. Too much zinc (dosages over 220 milligrams for many days) causes liver damage.

Beta-Blockers and Hearing Bata-blockers, such as metoprolol and propranolol, are very effective drugs for prevention of heat disease and hypertension. But these prescription drugs may also cause loss of hearing.

Scientists believe that certain beta-Blockers cause arthritis in the three tiny bones of the middle ear, because some forms of arthritis in other joints have already been traced to beta-blockers. When people stop taking these drugs, their deafness usually disappears in a few days. Talk to your doctor if you suspect your deafness is caused by medication.

Ear Infections For adults as well as children, permanent hearing loss can occur if an ear infection is left untreated. When your ears stay plugged up after a cold goes away, get some antibiotics from your doctor.

Loud Noises The most obvious sources of hearing loss are loud noises made by factory machinery, trains, and planes. But other loud noises around the home and office also permanently damages your hearing. Among these items are loud televisions and stereos, lawn mowers, carpentry tools, cars which lack mufflers, and computer printers. When noise reaches decibels of 85 or more, the sounds damage your hearing.some computer printers produce 85 decibels, and certain carpentry tools can go to 115 decibels or more!

Wear protective ear phones or plugs when possible.turn down the volume, especially if you are listening to music on a walkman. When you are in a noisy situation like a concert or aerobics class, give your ears a break from the noise every half-hour. Finally, buy quieter printers and appliances, or at least put pads around them to absorb the noise.
